Dear Parents,
Welcome
back, I hope you enjoyed a relaxing Christmas break. The children have returned
keen and I anticipate a productive spring term. The class will still be reading to an adult every week in class and I would appreciate it if you would also listen to them read a few pages of their class book at home every night (as a guide, approximately 6 – 8 pages or a single chapter). Please encourage them to read short passages of their book independently. The class novel this term is ‘Billionaire Boy’ by David Walliams and I would recommend the children purchase or borrow a copy of the book so we can share the reading of it in class, but this is by no means compulsory.
In English we will be continuing with the ‘Big Write’ initiative and concentrating on improving the children’s self-correction skills; writing and performing presentations, researching and writing travel guides and advertising. In Maths we will focus on mental arithmetic strategies, problem solving, fractions, angles and 3-D shapes.
Spelling lists will be brought home every Monday, to be practised in preparation for a test each Friday morning. Regular mental arithmetic and times tables’ tests (Big Maths ‘Beat That’ and ‘Learn Its’ challenges) will also continue this term. To get a head-start, the children should be rehearsing their 3 and 4 times tables frequently and completing their daily lists, each evening, at home.
Our first topic of the Spring Term is ‘Travel Agents’. This project has a geography focus and teaches children about climates, general world map knowledge and aspects of tourism. Following the half-term break, our topic will change to ‘Wild Wood’, which has a forest skills and art focus and teaches the children about woodland areas, animals which live in these habitats and food chains.
Our RE focus this half-term will be ‘Other Faiths and the Bible’ followed by ‘Jesus’ after half-term.
P.E. will still take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. We will be indoors on Mondays and playing outdoor games on Wednesdays, weather permitting. I would be grateful if you could ensure that your child has the appropriate, fully labelled kit on these days; including a plastic bag for muddy trainers!
If you have any concerns about these matters, or can offer your services in any way, please contact me at the school and I will be happy to discuss them further.
Regards,
Mr A. John
